What a resurface includes
A resurface runs in a set order, because each coat holds only as well as the surface under it.
- The court is cleaned, and dirt, debris and loose coating come off so the new coats bond to a sound surface.
- Cracks are cleaned out, filled and reinforced before any coat goes on, so they stay sealed under the new surface instead of showing through it.
- Low spots that hold water after rain are filled and leveled so the court drains.
- An acrylic resurfacer evens out the texture of the old surface.
- Acrylic color coats go on the playing area and the surround in the colors you choose.
- Lines are painted last, to the regulation layout for the court’s sport.
- Nets, posts and anchors are checked and replaced where they are worn.

Resurface or rebuild
A new coat fixes the surface. It cannot fix the slab under it. A slab that is sound, level and draining takes a resurface well. A slab that is heaving, settling or cracked all the way through pushes the same cracks back up through every new coat, so a resurface on it will not last.
That is why we check the slab on the site visit before we quote. If a resurface will hold, the written quote lists the repairs, the coats, the colors and the lines. If the court needs more than a coat, we tell you so rather than sell you one.
Why Phoenix courts wear faster
A Phoenix court sits in direct sun most of the year, and on a summer afternoon its surface runs far hotter than the air. That UV and heat wear an acrylic coat down, so the color fades and the surface cracks sooner than it would in a milder climate. Monsoon rain then gets into any crack left open and down into the slab.
These are the signs a court is due.
- Cracks that grow wider or longer each season.
- Coating that bubbles or peels, which means moisture is trapped under it.
- Color faded to chalk and lines that are hard to see.
- Water standing on the court after rain, which marks a low spot.
- Raised or sunken patches that make the footing uneven.
One of these is worth having us look at. Two or more usually mean the court needs a resurface.
Tennis court resurfacing
A tennis resurface covers the whole 60 by 120 foot footprint, the court itself plus the run-off behind the baselines and along the sides. If your players want pickleball as well, pickleball lines go on during the resurface in a second color so both games read clearly. For a new court rather than a recoat, see tennis court construction.
Pickleball court resurfacing and conversions
A pickleball resurface starts at $8,750 on a 34 by 64 foot court and $8,500 on a 30 by 60 foot court. Final price depends on size, condition, repairs, coating, striping and access. It follows the same order as any other resurface and finishes with lines to the regulation layout.
Pickleball lines can go on a basketball court in a second color as well. A tennis court going over to pickleball for good can be fully converted. A conversion starts at $14,500 and uses the whole tennis footprint, which fits up to four pickleball courts. Final price depends on size, condition, repairs, coating, striping and access.
Two conversions appear in Apex’s Google reviews. One customer had a basketball court converted and resurfaced for pickleball, in colors chosen to blend with the setting around it. Another had an underused game court turned into a pickleball court, and their guests are very pleased with it.
To build a new pickleball court, see pickleball court construction.
Basketball, multi-sport and bocce courts
Basketball half courts, full courts and multi-sport courts are resurfaced the same way, at the starting prices in the table above, with lines for every sport the court is used for. Bocce courts are resurfaced and rebuilt too, quoted after we see the court. For new courts, see basketball courts, multi-sport courts and bocce courts.
Recent resurfacing work
These jobs are described in Apex’s own Google reviews.
- A neglected tennis court in disrepair, restored after most of the companies the owner called never called back and the rest said the job was too big.
- A community’s tennis, basketball and pickleball courts, renovated for its board of directors.
- An old, damaged multi-sport court resurfaced for a homeowner who called it the smoothest of the five large renovations done on their house.
