How to Clean a Backyard Court

Outdoor court requires regular maintenance to keep it looking its best.

A backyard court can provide the whole family with hours of fun and exercise. But like any outdoor surface, it requires regular maintenance to keep it looking its best. Let's discuss a few tips about cleaning a backyard court:

Remove debris

Dirt, leaves, and debris can build up over time, making the surface slick and dangerous. Remove all debris from the court surface with a leaf blower or broom.

Power-wash

Once all the debris has been removed, it's time to power-wash the court. Furthermore, a pressure washer with a fan nozzle attachment is ideal. Be sure to hold the nozzle at least 12 inches from the court's surface and start in one corner, working in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

After power washing, allow the court to dry for at least 24 hours before applying any sealant or paint.

Eliminate standing water

Standing water can lead to moss and mildew growth, which can be difficult to remove once it takes hold. After a rainfall, use a squeegee or mop to remove any water pooling on the court's surface.

Remove foreign matter

In addition to dirt and water, any foreign matter that finds its way onto the court must be removed. Things like grease, oil, and gum can make the surface slick and challenging to play on. Use a putty knife to remove foreign matter from the court's surface.

Ensure there's good drainage

Finally, proper drainage is essential for maintaining a backyard court. If water isn't able to drain, it will pool on the surface and lead to moss and mildew growth. Please ensure the court has adequate drainage, and check the gutters and downspouts around the property's perimeter to ensure they're not directing water onto the court. Also, add drainage holes in low-lying areas of the yard.

Hire the pros

A backyard court can be a great addition to any home, but keeping it clean can be daunting. However, a professional service can clean and maintain the court. And if the court's surface needs repair or replacement, they'll discover this during maintenance, nipping in the bud what could become a costly problem later.
