Does Your Court Need a Professional Assessment?

Spring is upon us, and it's time to look over the court, which will be getting a lot more use now that the weather is warming up. Plenty of things can cause wear and damage to a court. While the easiest way to control damage is maintenance, there are plenty of things that make a court assessment worthwhile. Here are some of them:

Weeds

Even a hairline crack in a court can provide the perfect spot for weed seeds to nestle and sprout. Once they take root, it's easy to see how they can push at that crack and make it a little bigger each day. One wouldn't think a weed could be more robust than concrete, but, remember, it's insinuated itself into a weak spot, and it there all day every day, nudging as it grows.

Tree roots

Far from being limited to damaging pipes underground, tree roots can work their way along the soil surface and damage the court's edge. As with the weed seeds, gradually, the root will inflict significant damage. 

Stains

Despite meticulous court care, stains can appear as the result of leaves, tree sap, insects, fruit, bird droppings, and more. Once the material has hardened, there isn't a suitable way to remove it without further court damage. Prevention is the rule when it comes to stains. Trees should never be planted close enough to hang over a court, and debris should be cleaned off the court as soon as it appears.

Water 

Because a court is non-porous, standing water will degrade and cause damage to the court if it isn't removed promptly. Hard water, especially, will create an unsightly ring if it is allowed to evaporate on the court. Also, low spots can be unwelcome repositories for rainwater. 

When to Call a Pro

When a court shows signs of damage due to any of the previously named causes, or even something else, it may be time to call a pro. A court professional can conduct a facility assessment. This assessment will give the court owners the information to decide on a plan of action.  While we don't discount the value of a regular general contractor, a court assessment, even a repair or resurfacing, should be conducted by a company that specializes in courts and nothing else. 

At the time of the court assessment, other features, such as fencing, netting, lighting, and more, should also be reviewed to determine if repair, replacement, or upgrades are needed. As the weather warms up, players will be delighted with a court that is in good shape and ready for play.
