Children and the Home Court Advantage

Kids grow up quickly. They need a few things from their parents. Morals. A sense of self-worth. And a safe place to grow up. One of the ways we can give our kids these advantages and more is by playing games with them. A home basketball, bocce, tennis, or pickleball court is an excellent place to connect with your child.

According to Psychology Today, parents who engage in play with their children help them develop unique skill sets as well as offering physical, mental, and social health benefits. In addition to learning self-control and engaging gross motor skills, children who play games with their parents also have lower stress levels.

Physical play matters

While verbal and instructive types of play are valuable, physical play such as that carried out on a home court creates a more varied dynamic, giving a child more tools with which to cope with the world. It may seem like a hassle to put off our responsibilities or relaxation to play ball with our children. However, the benefits the child receives vastly surpass what one would expect, because they are long term and enduring. While one would think that children playing with siblings would have the same effect, studies show that children do not play with siblings in the same manner as they do their parents, and therefore don’t garner the same results.

Bonding

The parent also benefits from spending time with the child, as it raises their oxytocin levels. The parent will bond with the child and both profit from it. Those bonds are much less prevalent in our current society since we have many more tasks than in previous generations. We have to snag opportunities when we are able. Having a basketball or bocce court gives us a place on hand to play with our children.

While there is no promise that a home court will make your child grow up to be a wonderful person, the opportunities to spend time together should be snatched up when they are available. Sharing your interests and skills with your child is a way to enjoy one another, relax, and melt generational differences. Your children look up to you for their needs. Finding ways to meet those needs and enjoy the time in the process means the likelihood of more family time is a good possibility. Of all the benefits and opportunities we can provide for our children, the benefit of spending time with us far surpasses most other educational and monetary advantages.
