Becoming a Better Pickleball Player

Pickleball has gained immense popularity in recent years and is now one of America's fastest-growing sports. It lies somewhere between tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, and is suitable for people of all ages. Though it should be played on a pickleball court, if there isn't one nearby, you can even play it on a tennis court. On the surface, it may seem like a simple, and easy to play sport, but the fact is, it requires enough practice and skill and strategy to out-think the opponent.

If you love playing the game, and looking for ways to become better at it, here are a few tips that can be of help:

Practice

The first step to excel at any sport is practice. The more you practice all the shots, the better you will become at the game and achieve full potential over time. Find out the weak spots and work towards improving them. Also, along with the regular exercises, try skipping, hitting the ball against the wall, and hone the judgment skills to improve the pickleball performance.

Dink well

Dinking is the critical part of a pickleball game that can take the game to the next level. Practicing it regularly, mastering it, and learning to dink well with patience will keep the opponents busy and running and force them to change their game.

Target the weak player

To be a better player, identifying and assessing the opponent is essential. Knowing who the strong opponent is will help keep the ball away from them as much as possible. Targeting the weaker player and keeping him busy can help you get an edge in the game.

Don't try too much

Trying too many things in a single game will lead to a lot of mistakes and unforced errors. Be consistent and play steadily for a successful game. Keep the shots simple and avoid being impulsive or take unnecessary risks.

Spin

In games like tennis, volleyball, and pickleball, a ball that spins a little, is more challenging for the opponent to return. It will become unpredictable for them as the ball can go in any direction. When you become comfortable with the game, practice, and add sidespin or topspin to the game.

The third drop shot

Though considered one of the most fundamental but hardest shots to perfect, it is essential to master the drop shot and use it judiciously. It works best when you are out of position and want to buy time to get into the right place. It may not always land right, but it is worth a shot.

Work toward improving the backhand

Most pickleball players have a weaker backhand or forehand. Working on it and making it a strong point will help you get better at pickleball.

Communication

Better communication, syncing movements, and supporting the partner, are skills that are underestimated in the pickleball game. Use signs and gestures, and work towards understanding each other's body language to reduce miscommunication.

Becoming a pro at pickleball requires time and patience. Keep the game simple and unpredictable for the opponents to guess.
